Japanese Association of Museums Award 2020

[December 17, 2020]

On November 25, 2020, the Japanese Association of Museums (JAM) announced the inaugural winners of the JAM Award: the Showa Era Life Style Museum (SELS Museum) and Chihiro Museum.

The JAM award was established in 2020 to commemorate JAM’s 90th anniversary. The selection committee, nominated by the JAM’s Board, selects museums basically from among JAM members that have made outstanding contributions and demonstrated exemplary service to the Japanese and international museum community.

The SELS Museum specializes in collecting and presenting objects common in Japanese daily life during the 1920s through the 1980s, and has been highly praised for its pioneering participation in reminiscence therapy for the elderly through the use of its extensive collection of familiar objects.

As a winner of the JAM Award, the SELS Museum will have the opportunity to present at the Best in Heritage 2021 conference, held in partnership with the International Council of Museums (ICOM) and Europa Nostra. The conference will be held in the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Dubrovnik, Croatia.
