About ICOM Japan

ICOM Japan is part of a global network of museum and heritage professionals committed to preserving the world’s natural and cultural heritage. As a branch of the International Council of Museums based in Paris, it represents the international interests of its member museums and museum professionals across Japan.

Since its establishment in 1951, the Japanese National Committee for ICOM has pursued these objectives and contributed to the improvement of its members' activities in Japan. ICOM Japan complements the Japanese Association of Museums in that both associations provide membership services and advocacy on behalf of the Japanese museum community, with ICOM Japan providing an international perspective and the Japanese Association of Museums focusing on national matters.

ICOM Japan promotes and supports:

• international collaboration between museums and museum workers
• acceptance, understanding, sharing and the exchange of ideas and resources
• understanding of global museum values and issues
• the work of colleagues in Japan and Asia
• the recognition and reward of good international museum practice and innovation
• the interests of members

Board members are elected for a three-year term. The current following list is current as of the annual election held in May 2023.
